Elder Abuse:Elder Abuse is a term referring to any negligent act by a caregiver or other person, that causes harm or a serious risk of harm to a vulnerable adult over 60 years of age. The types of elder abuse are physical, sexual, emotional, confinement, neglect, and financial exploitation. It should be emphasized that elder abuse can be very serious and several murders have occurred in the Northwest Suburbs. Elder abuse can affect people of all ethnic backgrounds and social status, and can affect both men and women. The Illinois Department on Aging encourages people to report if they suspect abuse, neglect or financial exploitation. Some professionals are mandated reporters. All reporters are kept confidential. Anyone who suspects that an older adult is being mistreated should call the Illinois Department on Aging Elder Abuse Hotline at 866-800-1409. You may also call your local Elder Abuse Provider Agency.
